RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
